German artist Cornelia Erdmann's artwork "The People" in Legislative Council in Hong Kong

The German artist Cornelia Erdmann has lived and worked in Hong Kong since 2006. One of her latest works is the installation "The People" in the new Legislative Council Complex of Hong Kong. The wall space in the staircase is populated with silhouettes of a representative demographic selection of people and their everyday activities of the streets of Hong Kong: men, women and children of all ages and ethnicities passing time, playing, working, trading, lingering, individually or in groups, busy or bored.

The artwork "The People" came into being from a two-stage open competition, which was tendered by the Legislative Council (LegCo) in Hong Kong in summer 2010 and in which Ms. Erdmann came out on top with her design.

The formation and construction phase for "The People" began in early 2011, initially in the artist's studio. The installation of the artwork had taken place at the construction site of the LegCo Complex from July 2011 and was completed in December 2011, in time for the opening of the new complex.
