Wai Yin Association organised learning trips to Germany for local teachers and students - supported by the Consulate General, Goethe-Institut and the German National Tourist Office
On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the Wai Yin Association, a Hong Kong charitable organisation, has embarked on a school project in 2012 for teachers and less privilieged students in Hong Kong to experience overseas cultures. Germany was selected as the first destination country of this project and the project was supported by the German Consulate General. Lufthansa German Airlines also sponsored discounted flight tickets for eight teams of students selected from local schools to travel to Germany in summer 2012. The students had to decide in advance on the route of their trip and places to visit as well as submit an estimated budget. Prior to their departure for Germany, Goethe-Institut Hongkong had offered the young scholars special German courses to prepare them for their stay in Germany. In addition, the Hong Kong Office of the German National Tourist Board also participated in the preparations.

The project will continue next year. Following the successful kick-off in 2012, Germany has once again been chosen as the destination country for 2013.

German dragon boat team's success in Club Crew World Championships in Hong Kong
The 8th Club Crew World Championships took place in July 2012 in Hong Kong, in which teams from Germany also participated. Among which were the "Neckardrachen", a dragon boat team of the sports club "Union Böckingen" in Heilbronn, Baden-Wuerttemberg. The "Neckardrachen" are regarded as one of the best dragon boat teams in Germany and were in the past years several-time German Champions. Many of the athletes have international experiences, as they have already been called up in the national team for many times. The team prepared for the Club Crew World Championships Hong Kong intensively for many months. The "Neckardrachen" travelled with almost 100 athletes aged from 17 – 63 years to Hong Kong. In the competition classes Premier (under 40 years), Senior A (over 40 years) and Senior B (over 50 years) the "Neckardrachen" obtained totally 7 world champion titles, 4 vice world champion titles, 3 third places and further front places. With this result the team "Neckardrachen" reached in the overall standing a top position. Especially for the athletes from Germany, who are not used to Hong Kong's sub-tropical weather, this is a more than delightful result. But could it also be the strong team spirit that contributed to the performance shown?

It is also noteworthy that, the participants paid for all the training and travelling expenses themselves, and they also received assistance from AUDI and the VB Reisen GmbH from Bad Friedrichshall. Back in Germany, the "Neckardrachen" are now concentrating on the preparations for the German Dragon Boat Championships and they are confident to come off well again.
